I am a materials engineer from Vancouver, Canada.
Vancouver's calling card is its backdrop: a river basin where the mountains meet the ocean. The Greater Vancouver Region sits along an ecologically rich stretch of coastline, interacting with the local ecology in planned and unplanned ways.
The municipality of Vancouver is recognized for their leadership in sustainable planning. Backed by a network of visionary planners, Vancouver politicians have pioneered techniques for making development sustainable. Their successes are noteable, however city planners and citizens alike recognize that the city has a long way still to go towards sustainability.
I attended The University of British Columbia, where sustainability is a guiding principle. My studies included materials engineering, experimental physics, and microeconomics.
My carbon footprint (as measured by the Live Earth calculator) is 6.6 tonnes. I would like to get it down to 2 tonnes. For reference, the average footprint for the pacific northwest region is 13 tonnes. The average for Canada is 17 tonnes.
World Viewing began in 2006 as an attempt to catalog lectures from several websites. Since that time much more content has been made available, though viewership of lectures remains relatively low. Because the talks included in World Viewing were mostly given to public audiences, I believe that they have the potential to capture the interest of viewers outside of academia.
